Got a clogged drain?

Nothing can put a stop to your day like a stop in your drain.

It never fails when things are moving along swimmingly something as small as a ball of hair or larger like tree roots, put a sudden stop to everything by clogging a drain.

Before you reach for the liquid drain cleaning solution, consider these environmentally safe and less harmful solutions to unclog your drain.

Use a wire coat hanger

This is a quick and low-cost solution for dealing with a nasty clog. Take a wire hanger - think the dry cleaning hangers that you have piling up in the closet - and straighten it while retaining the hook at the very end. Push the hanger, hook first, gently down the drain being careful not to push directly downwards, which can move the clog further down the drain. Gently twist the hanger in a clockwise motion, while pulling down and up as fast as you can. Pull the hanger out of the drain slowly.

Plunge it

A plunger works simply by suction and pressure. When you move the plunger up and down over the drain, the tight seal moves the water in the pipes up and down which will dislodge most clogs. There are four different types of plungers and each plunger is designed for different types of drains.

Use dish soap and hot water

This is a method that includes items most people have available in their homes. Pour a healthy amount, about a ¼ cup, of dish soap down the drain, and let it sit 5-10 minutes. After 5-10 minutes, take hot water - not boiling - and pour it down the drain. Give the water some time to sit before checking the drain.

Vinegar, hot water and baking soda

Three household superpowers that are no match in the fight against clogged drains are vinegar, hot water, and baking soda. The chemical reaction made by combining vinegar and baking soda will eat through some clogs. First, remove any visible debris from the drain opening, pour ¾ cup dry baking down the drain, followed by a ½ cup of vinegar. Next, cover the drain with a rag or plug and let it sit for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes pour hot water - not boiling - down the drain.

Snake it

Use a drain snake, which can be purchased at your local hardware store. A drain snake is a slender, flexible auger that is often used to dislodge difficult clogs that cannot be loosened with a plunger.

Here are simple instructions on how to snake your drain.
